Fall is one of my favorite times of year on Hilton Head Island. The summer crowds thin out, the air turns crisp along the marsh, and the island’s calendar fills with traditions that locals look forward to all year. If you live here or are thinking about making the island home, November gives you a wonderful look at what everyday life feels like in the Lowcountry. Here are the five events I’m circling on my calendar this season.
Key Takeaways
- The Lantern Parade lights up the Coligny area on November 14
- Hilton Head Dance Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” runs across two November weekends
- Sea Pines hosts wagon rides and a Caramel Apple Festival at Heritage Farm
- Harbour Town Lights kicks off the holiday season on November 27
Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade
The Lantern Parade has become one of the most memorable nights of the year on the south end. Hosted by the Town’s Office of Cultural Affairs, it fills the evening sky with glowing, handmade creations near the Coligny Beach coastline.
What to Know Before You Go
- Date: Saturday, November 14, 2026
- Time: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
- Location: Lowcountry Celebration Park
- Highlights: Large illuminated lanterns by artist Chantelle Rytter, plus hundreds of colorful lanterns made by residents, visitors, and local organizations
- Live music: Black Sheep Ensemble, Soda City Band, the United States Marine Corps Dirty Boots Brass Band, and Atlanta Drum Academy
Lowcountry Celebration Park sits just off Pope Avenue, steps from Coligny Plaza. I suggest arriving early, grabbing dinner nearby, and finding a good spot before the sky starts to glow.
“The Nutcracker” by Hilton Head Dance Theatre
Nothing signals the start of the holiday season on the island quite like Hilton Head Dance Theatre’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.” This beloved show is a Crescendo event, part of the island’s celebration of arts and culture each fall.
Performance Details
- Dates: November 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22, 2026
- Venue: The Seahawk Cultural Center
- Format: Six live performances across two weekends
- Tickets and showtimes: Contact Hilton Head Dance School at 843-785-5477
With two full weekends of performances, you have plenty of flexibility to plan around dinner reservations or out-of-town guests. I always recommend booking seats early, since the weekend shows tend to be popular.
Thanksgiving Wagon Rides in Sea Pines
If you want a slower, more scenic way to enjoy the season, the Thanksgiving Wagon Rides at The Sea Pines Resort are a lovely choice. The ride takes you through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, where the fall colors and quiet wetlands show off a side of the island many visitors never see.
Plan Your Ride
- Dates: Daily through Saturday, November 28, 2026, beginning November 23
- Start time: 10:00 AM
- Meeting point: Heritage Farm, 185 Greenwood Drive
- Booking: Reserve online through Sea Pines or call 843-842-1979
Be sure to follow the driving instructions in your confirmation email, since Sea Pines is a gated community. The Forest Preserve is one of my favorite places on the island to show buyers how much natural beauty sits right inside one of Hilton Head’s most iconic neighborhoods.
Caramel Apple Festival at Heritage Farm
The day after Thanksgiving, Heritage Farm hosts the Caramel Apple Festival, a relaxed afternoon of fall fun in the heart of Sea Pines. It’s a sweet way to ease into the holiday weekend before heading to Harbour Town that evening.
Festival Highlights
- Date: Friday, November 27, 2026
- Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
- Location: Heritage Farm, 185 Greenwood Drive
- Activities: Caramel apples, games, crafts, and more
- Booking: Reserve online or call the Sea Pines Recreation Department at 843-842-1979
Heritage Farm is a working farm within Sea Pines, and it makes a charming backdrop for an afternoon outdoors. Pairing this festival with the Harbour Town tree lighting later in the day makes for a full and festive Friday.
Harbour Town Lights
Harbour Town Lights is the event that officially welcomes the holiday season to Hilton Head Island. The harbor glows with illuminated seasonal figures, and a towering Christmas tree takes center stage beneath the red and white stripes of the Harbour Town Lighthouse.
Key Dates and Details
- Season: November 27, 2026 through January 1, 2027
- Tree lighting: Friday, November 27, just before the Gregg Russell Concert at 7:30 PM
- Location: Harbour Town, 149 Lighthouse Road
- Giving back: Bring canned goods or new, unwrapped toys to place in the well by the Liberty Oak stage to support The Deep Well Project
The Deep Well Project has served neighbors in need on Hilton Head Island since 1973, so this is a meaningful way to give back while you enjoy the lights. Strolling the harbor after dark, with the boats lit up along the docks, is one of my favorite winter traditions on the island.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to live in Sea Pines to attend the Sea Pines events?
No, the Thanksgiving Wagon Rides, Caramel Apple Festival, and Harbour Town Lights are open to the public. Because Sea Pines is gated, you may need to pay a gate fee if you are not a resident or resort guest. I always suggest checking with The Sea Pines Resort ahead of time so your visit goes smoothly.
Which of these events require advance booking?
I recommend booking the wagon rides and the Caramel Apple Festival through Sea Pines, and reserving “The Nutcracker” tickets early. The Lantern Parade and Harbour Town Lights are easier to simply show up for. Arriving early for both will help you find parking and a great viewing spot.
Is fall a good time to tour homes on Hilton Head Island?
Yes, I find that fall is one of the best seasons to explore the island. The weather is mild, traffic is lighter, and community traditions give you a real sense of what living here feels like. Many buyers I work with appreciate seeing neighborhoods at a calmer pace before the holidays.
